There are lots of fresh digging all along the east Kootenay fire road near McLeod Meadows campground. The holes were dug by bears rooting out hedysarum, a common member of the pea family, that lines many of the lower trails throughout Kootenay Park.

Hedysarum is also called bear root because this sweet tasting high nutrient root forms a good part of the bears diet, particularly this time of year when other green forage is unavailable.
