Coyote stalks through the grass to track down prey by Larry Halverson

It was interesting to watch this coyote mousing near McLeod Meadows Campground in Kootenay National Park.

The coyote spent  an hour patrolling about 2 km of along the grassy ditch, listening and smelling for mice and voles. Once a mouse was detected the coyote would spring into the air and land face first into the grass to obtain it‘s prey. I only observed 3 successful meals. It seemed like a lot of energy for so little nourishment.
