Kootenay 2003 Fires by John Dean

John Dean's new work featured at The Edge Gallery in Canmore is a series of recent photographs from the site of the 2003 forest fire in Kootenay National Park. The Photographs were made with a high resolution digital camera and are printed on beautiful cold rolled art paper.

These photographs are from the site of the 17,000 hectare forest fire in Kootenay National Park in 2003. Although more than 10 years have passed, many of the trees still stand. The bark has gone, the branches are bare, and much of the undergrowth at higher elevations still hasn't returned.

It is this stark, almost monochromatic world that has drawn John to this place. Working with a medium format digital camera, lenses designed for high resolution capture, and tripod, the images are filled with detail. The formal composition, compressed picture plane, and lush surface reference painting and drawing as much as photography.
These images are printed on Moab Entrada rag paper with Ultrachome pigment inks to ensure long term archival stability.
